About RosGeo (Russian Geological Society)
RosGeo is a noncommercial organization. It is a collective member of IMGA since 2009 and one of the biggest professional society in Russia numbering more than 1,000 members (geologists and geoscientists), which incorporated 55 regional divisions throughout the country. The avenues of RosGeo activities include:
- Popularization of geological knowledge;
- The role and the place of geology in the development of country’s economy;
- Promotion of new technologies development;
- Participation in geology-oriented legislation policy of the Federal Government;
- Social programs aimed at supporting of the Russia’s geology veterans.
Attached to the Society is its Children’s and Young People Geology Movement incorporating 20,000 “young geologists”, who specialize in different geoscience-oriented disciplines under the guidance of professional geologists, members of RosGeo. Federal, regional and local meetings of the “young geologists”, as well as field trips and competitions are held for the young people who are interested in geosciences on the annual basis.
RosGeo participates in international and local exhibitions dedicated to geosciences, holds annual competitions on the best paper in geosciences among schoolchildren and university students, as well as professionals, realize scientific, popular and educational publications on geosciences. Also, along with the Russian Union of Oil & Gas Industrialists, the Russian Union of Commodity Producers and the Russian Union of Mining Industrialists, the Society publishes The Mineral Resources of Russia: Economy and Management magazine.
The top governing body of RosGeo is the Russian Congress of Geologists. Operational management is carried out by the Executive Committee headed by the President and five Vice Presidents appointed on a voluntary basis, and the Executive Board, appointed on a permanent basis.
RosGeo is financed by its corporate members’ donations, and services rendered to the Russian mining, exploration and producing companies.
RosGeo Medical Geology Division
In implementation of the decisions of the XXXII session of the International Geological Congress by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia (Deputy Director of the Department of Geology and Mineral Resources and State Policy and Regulation, Nickolai V. Miletenko), the Russian Geological Society (RosGeo, President Victor P. Orlov, Vice-President Evgeny G. Farrahov), Fedorovsky All-Russian Research Institute for Mineral Resources (VIMS, Deputy Director Dr. Igor G. Pechenkin, Science Secretary Dr. Iosif F. Volfson, Dr. Georgy V. Ostroumov, Dr. Galina A. Sidorenko) and subdivisions of the Russian Academy of the Medical Sciences (RAMS) and the Russian Medical Society (RMS, President of RAMS and RMS Academician Valentin Pokrovsky), Russian State Medical University (RGMU, Rector Academician Vladimir N. Yarygin, Dr. Yelena V. Kremkova), Sysin Scientific-Research Institute of Human Ecology and Environmental Hygiene (Director, Academician of RAMS Youri A. Rakhmanin, Deputy Director, Member Correspondent of RAMS Nickolai V. Rusakov), the creation of MEDICAL GEOLOGY DIVISION on the base of RosGeo was initiated.
The RosGeo MEDICAL GEOLOGY DIVISION (MGD) was created on March 2005 at a meeting between the representatives of geological and medical communities, which took place in Fedorovsky All-Russian Research Institute for Mineral Resources (VIMS, Moscow), and which coincided with memories of professor Nathan I. Ginzburgh, a famous Russian mineralogist. MGD was established on the basis of an initial agreement between Russian Geological Society (RosGeo) and Russian Medical Society (RMS).
MGD is a single organization, legally accredited to represent the Russian Federation in International Medical-Geology Association (IMGA), a coordinating organ which was founded on decision XXXII session of the International Geological Congress at August 2004 in Florence (Italy).
MGD is a voluntary association of the scientists – geologists, geochemists, mineralogists, geophysicists, physicians, chemists, biologists, microbiologists, and others who study the affects of geological processes, objects, phenomena, materials (minerals, ores, volcano emissions, atmospheric dust, water and elements, falling into their composition and etc.) and other natural as well as terms under which such affect becomes possible. The main purpose of MGD RosGeo activities is to comprehensively support the studies in the field of medical geology on territory of the Russian Federation.
