Armenia is rich in its ancient and diverse culture and at all times stands out for its welcoming and hospitable people. The Armenians are always happy to meet visitors coming from different parts of the world.

The history of Armenia has more than 3000 years and is associated with the biblical Mountain Ararat, and with the times when Noah's Ark landed on the sacred Mountain Ararat, and life on Earth was reborn.

The mystery and the biblical mission of Armenia is also reflected in its culture. Originality of Armenia and its culture is emphasized by ancient Christian cultural and historical heritage. Armenia is rich in its cultural treasures, most of which indicate the specificity of cultural creations of the age-old values.

Yerevan is the capital of Armenia and one of the three hubs of the South Caucasus. It is as old as Rome and Babylon, Nineveh and Carthage. It is home to over a million people - the largest Armenian community in the world.

Architecture of today's Yerevan combines the elements of past and present. According to the outstanding architect Alexander Tamanyan's design Yerevan has radial-circular arrangement. Many buildings, located at the central part of Yerevan, were designed by Alexander Tamanyan. The beautiful houses and buildings in Yerevan, constructed of basalt, marble, onyx, volcanic tuffa-stone, blend well with broad lines of the streets & avenues, green parks & vast squares. An integral part of panorama of Yerevan is the biblical Mountain Ararat, symbol of Armenia, just situated out of border.

There are many theatres, museums and monuments in Yerevan. It is impossible to imagine now Yerevan without Matenadaran, Opera and Ballet theatre, Youth Palace, Sport and Concert Complex and National Academy of Sciences. If you wish to see the whole of Yerevan you have to go up to Victory Park and the whole city will be seen spread at the foot of gorgeous Ararat.

Tourism in Armenia has been developing every year and the capital city of Yerevan is one of the major tourist destinations in the country.

ALAVERDI

ALAVERDI
Colorful Alaverdi is situated on the steep slopes of Debed river canyon in the north- eastern part of the Lori region. The main feature in the arrangement of Alaverdi is that it is divided into two parts: the upper part and lower part. The difference in height between these two parts is about 300 m. The local population, which is about 16 thousand people moves across the mountainous terrain on a specially constructed paths or funicular. In Armenia, Alaverdi is known since ancient times. Until a few centuries before our era in its territory, defensive fortress was placed, and in the XIII century, the estate is mentioned as a place of copper.

After many centuries, the mining and processing of nonferrous metals now is also considered the main branch of the economy of Alaverdi.

In 1801, the territory of Alaverdi became a part of the Russian Empire.

In 1938 Alaverdi got the status of the town, and in 1963 became a city of republican subordination.

There are famous cultural sites, such as monasteries in Sanahin, Haghpat, Akhtala, Horakerte, Ardvi, Odzun temple and church Kobayr in the suburbs.
